About us
Stratford Judo Club was founded in 1972 by Kenny Harris, 2nd Dan and Mick Foulger, 1st Dan shortly after they were joined by Michael McCarthy 3rd Dan. The club began training in an old cinema in Tramway Avenue above Bill Stevens' gym; but by 1977 had outgrown the venue and moved to its current location in Carpenters and Docklands Club, Gibbins Road. As the club grew in popularity and success a dedicated dojo was built at the club and it remains here to this day.
During its history the club has trained many Dan grades, coached from junior players through their coloured grades until they have attained their black belts. In addition the club has produced numerous players who have competed at national and international level representing their country. Most famous of these being Bridget McCarthy our World Bronze medallist who represented Great Britain in the first Women’s World Judo championships in Madison Square Gardens, USA.
Since its early beginnings Stratford Judo Club have developed close links with other judo clubs throughout Europe including France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland and Germany. The club regularly travels to Germany with a group of junior players to take part in an annual summer training camp with German, French and other European players. Stratford Judo Club has classes for all ages and abilities - Tiny Tots, Juniors, Youth Seniors and Veterans. |
